According to the Harvard Business Review, nearly 80% of the openings available at any one time are never advertised. This means there is more competition for the few advertised positions than those positions available in the hidden job market. Initiating contact with an employer by cold calling can provide access to a hidden job market. You should respond to ads but, the main thrust of your efforts should be towards identifying the hidden job market.

Responding to ads is not the most efficient search strategy, but when you use this strategy, you need to be very intentional in your approach. It is recommended that you:

  • Identify reliable sources where positions are posted
  • Respond to ads with a personalized career approach
