University Mission and Values

Wood carving of the words

It might seem that asking the question about mission and values is secondary. In reality, if you choose a program that does not align with your personal values, you may find yourself in a very uncomfortable position that compromises who you are. Here are some questions to consider:

  • Do the university mission and values resonate and align with your life values?
  • How does the university support initiatives to respond to the local community’s needs?
  • Does the university truly value diversity? How is that demonstrated?
  • How about its role in the wider community?

For additional questions that you may want to consider, review the tips discussed in the Understanding Diversity in the Workplace module on identifying culturally-sensitive grad schools.
