Geographic Location

If you are considering moving to a new location to pursue graduate studies, you should research that area to make sure you are comfortable with spending two or more years there. Here are some questions to consider:

  • Taking into account the weather and social/political climate, can you picture yourself living there for a minimum of two years?
  • Is the cost of living (e.g., housing, food, etc.) reasonable given a limited budget?
  • What opportunities are there beyond the university for social, cultural, and recreational activities?
  • What are employment opportunities in the area, both during school and long-term?
  • Is there a public transportation system?
