Faculty are at the core of any graduate program. You will be taking classes with several of them, and most likely conducting research or special projects with at least one. Thus you need to make sure that they are qualified and able to support your goals and interests. Here are some questions you need to ask about faculty:

  • Do your research and teaching interests match those of at least a few faculty members? Who can be your advisor?
  • What is the faculty to student ratio?
  • Do faculty hold degrees from leading institutions?
  • What type of special recognition have they earned (e.g., awards, grants, etc.)?
  • What have they published and where?
  • Do the top scholars teach, or are they primarily involved in research?
  • Is there diversity in both cultural backgrounds and research interests?
